Deer Hair Sow Bug

Sow bugs (Isopoda) often live in similar habitat to scuds. They are similar in appearance, except they are flattened from top to bottom, with the legs sticking out the sides. This pattern was created by Jeff Morgan and can be found on the West Fly web site.

Materials

Hook:Dai Riki 300, size 12-14
Thread:White or gray
Body:Dubbed deear hair, white or cream. Trim on top and bottom when finished dubbing
Back:Gray Body Stretch
Ribbing:4X clear monofilament

Tying Instructions

  1. Debarb hook, place in vise, start thread.
  2. Tie in shellback material and ribbing.
  3. Dub deer body.
  4. Pull shellback over dubbing and tie down near head.
  5. Rib with monofilament.
  6. Whip finish and trim.
  7. Pluck out legs with dubbing needle.
